What Can Self-Isolation Teach You?

Being isolated excites me a little bit, but I know everyone isn’t the same. There’s a lot going on in this world, and usually things move at a fast pace, but when you isolate yourself it gives you time to think. Time to reflect on what’s really important in your life and time to prioritize what you can. This could be good for some and bad for others, but that time is there, and it is what you make of it.

If you have read any of my posts in the past then you already know that I try and take advantage of my “free” time as much as possible. I set goals and I make lists in order for me to try and focus on things I want to accomplish in the long and short term. With so much happening on a regular basis (social media, work, tv, gym, night life, relationships) sometimes it is nice to just completely isolate yourself and focus on 1-3 things. In the time that you take to really just have a full 24 hours to yourself, there are plenty of things to be discovered!

With the quarantine in full affect across the globe, I am seeing so many people post things about how bored they currently are. My first thought is, “Are you even trying to do anything with this free time?” We live in a time where you can literally become a millionaire off of making content on your phone. There is plenty to do! Just concentrate on something other than not being able to go around a bunch of people! And if you are one of these people then it’s safe to say that you have already discovered something about yourself when it comes to isolation, you have a hard time handling it.

A quick list of things you can do while isolated…

1.)        Workout – it doesn’t take a whole lot of equipment or space. You can did sit ups, push ups, and jumping jacks. You can also get creative and add some other things. Planks are good as well!

2.)        Read a book! Why not educate yourself or at least entertain yourself with a good read.

3.)        Write a book or keep a journal. Get out all these “crazy” ideas you have been holding hostage for far too long.

4.)        Reach out to some people you haven’t spoken to in a while. Just check on others and see how people are doing.

5.)        Clean house!! Go through as much as you can. Throw out things you no longer need, bag up things to donate, organize your clothes and the rest of your stuff. You could also go through things that you think would sell online and have yourself a side business. Seems like a lot of work? Might be, but if you have the time now, more than ever, why not? I already know a few people who have completely taken advantage of this opportunity and I plan on joining them soon enough!

There’s a lot of self-reflecting that can take place during isolation, sometimes it can even drive you crazy. However, this could be the time where you attack things head on. Address the issues that bother you and then figure out how you can go from there to have a better mindset or a better relationship with yourself. I highly recommend keeping a journal for times like this. There are times when what’s in your head, becomes too much and you need to get it out somehow, some way, if you can't speak to someone write it down.

Being isolated can lead you to greatness if you allow it to. Just take some time to focus and think about some things that you wouldn’t normally have the time to dedicate yourself to. Get to know yourself and the people around you a little better. Be in the moment!!
