More Than Enough by Elaine Welteroth - Book Review

This was such a GREAT read! It’s a powerful story about creating your own destiny and believing in your gifts. I took so many things from this book that have allowed me to find new ways to express myself and my own growth, but I think it also gave me strength in being unapologetically me.

There are times where I talk a lot about not allowing others to define who you are. This is something I preach to young people or I have conversations with my friends and family about this. As an athlete, growing up most people only knew me because of the sports I played and continue to play now. But I’ve always known myself to be much more and I have plenty of other interests. As I get older I showcase some of those other interests more and more, and it seems to “baffle” some people at times.

I’ve always gone after the things that I want in my life, but there’s always been this underlying struggle it seems. There are the fake supporters and the “friends” or even family that hold you back sometimes, or try to at least. There are those “wrong turns” and distractions that take place from time to time, but you always learn from them and grow. There are those times where you have to make those difficult decisions to further your career, or where you do quite a bit of work behind the scenes and may not get the credit you truly deserve.

And as a black female, that has been in several leadership roles, or is the head of a team or organization, I fully understand and can relate to some of the challenges she has had to face. Being the only person in a room that looks like me, and is part of a culture that some people might try and mimic but could never truly understand and relate to, I get it.

I truly enjoyed every part of this book. I think this a great book for ALL young women to read, but especially young women of color! In this day and age, and with the climate of today’s society, I think it is imperative for allies and for anyone that just wants to be able to relate or find a common ground with people that may have a different background than themselves, this is a good read for you. For anyone who is learning how to navigate in the business world, or in their own space, and need some kind of push or encouragement that way they do NOT continue to make themselves small so that others feel big, THIS IS FOR YOU!

For me, this book was right on time. I’m in the middle of building my brand and business, while also playing professional basketball. I wear several different hats and it can be very challenging. Not the actual work of it all, but a lot of the relationships that come with what I’m doing. The different bridges in communities and understanding one another because everyone comes from different walks of life. This is an intimate look at the pitfalls and everyday obstacles many of us might go through when climbing this mountain of life, all while choosing your own path no matter what or who came before you!

Elaine Welteroth – More Than Enough

This is a book that I could read again in a few months. I highly encourage anyone and everyone to read it and then to gift it to someone else. (I say that but I love the book and probably won't give my copy away but I may purchase another for someone else!) I would love to hear and discuss certain takeaways from this book that you might have. If there is a book similar to this one that empowers others, expresses different forms of leadership, and shows other people breaking the norm, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!
